Townsend Police Investigating Home Shooting Incident

TOWNSEND — Police Chief Erving Marshall reports that the Townsend Police Department, in conjunction with State Police, are investigating what appears to be a self-inflicted accidental shooting at home this morning.

At approximately 9:44 a.m., Townsend Police and Townsend EMS responded to 202 Mason Road in West Townsend on a report that someone had reportedly been shot.

Upon entering the home, police found that the 66-year-old homeowner, whose name is not being released at this time, had a gunshot wound to the left arm.

Townsend EMS began treating the victim for what they considered to be a life-threatening injury and requested assistance from Life Flight. A crew landed on the soccer field on Mason Road and transported the victim to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

The weapon, a .38 caliber revolver, was recovered at the scene.

“As of right now, this appears to be an accidental shooting by the victim. There is no reason for concern,” Chief Marshall said. “We appreciate residents’ patience as we review this incident.”

The Massachusetts State Police Criminal Investigation Division is working in conjunction with the Townsend Police Department during their investigation.
